Frank Nijsen studied both biology and medical biology at the University of Amsterdam. He performed his PhD research on Radioactive holmium-loaded poly(L-lactic acid) microspheres for treatment of liver metastases at the Departments of Pharmacy of the and Nuclear Medicine, University of Utrecht (2001). After receiving PhD, he was group leader at the University Medical Center Utrecht for over 15 years. Frank supervised the preclinical work of the holmium microspheres and coordinated the translation to the clinic, and the valorization of the microspheres to the community. In 2015, he cofounded Quirem Medical and became CSO. Frank started first of December 2017 as group leader on “Experimental interventional nuclear medicine” at the Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, Radboudumc. His group works on research and development of real-time image guided treatment approaches for malignancies. A close cooperation exists with the medical specialists (interventional radiologists, nuclear physicians, oncologists, radiotherapists and immunologists). The research that is performed fits into a bench-to-bedside-to-community approach of translational research.
